Action research project: implementation of a compassionate city – Almada
| Resumo: | Introduction: Ageing, loneliness, and end-of-life are linked concepts, mainly relevant for people with advanced disease or at end-of-life. A Public Health policy aiming to ease suffering is essential for these people, that benefit from Palliative Care. Community engagement in end-of-life situations, using compassion as a tool composes a potential compassionate community or city. The New Health Foundation developed the All with you Method for implementation of these communities and cities. Aim: To build a development and evaluation model of a compassionate city in advanced disease and end-of-life for Almada, in Portugal. Material and Methods: An investigation-action qualitative study in the União de Freguesias de Almada, Cova da Piedade, Pragal e Cacilhas, in Almada was performed, with gathering of community resources. Based in All with you Method, a content analysis was done, and a compassionate city project was built. Results: Regarding the population, 29% are elderly, 45% are single and 34% live alone. Twenty-two community resources were collected and 12 actions to develop were defined. The level of community engagement is level 2. Nineteen objectives and goals were established and multiple indicators of structure, process and result were defined. Conclusions: Almada is one of the first compassionate city project to follow Todos Contigo method, in Portugal. We found various interesting resources in the community. Defined indicators will allow project’s evaluation in the long run. Various limitations could emerge during the project execution. The city of Almada gathers various resources for the implementation of a compassionate city project. This project makes it possible to build a future compassionate city and it contributes with scientific knowledge for the building of other future Portuguese compassionate cities. |
