Making a case for war. The lost provinces of Alsace and Lorraine in popular French fiction from 1905 to 1914
| Resumo: | With the approach of the twentieth century, many French nationalists became increasingly interested in the provinces of Alsace and Lorraine, which France had ceded to Germany at the end of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71. As the spirit of revanchisme spread throughout France at this time, many nationalistic French writers regularly presented the circumstances of Alsatians and Lorrainers in their novels. This article will analyze a selection of patriotic French novels that were published in France from 1910 to 1914. Taking the plight of the population that was living under the German annexation in the ceded territories as their primary topic, these popular narratives were instrumental in preparing the French nation to accept a renewed military conflict with Germany with the not so subtle goal of liberating the annexed territories from Germany and restoring them to France. |
