Resumo:Metabolic Syndrome consists of the co-occurrence of several cardiovascular risk factors, like insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obesity. In current society, this condition constitutes a significant health and social problem, and may even be considered an authentic epidemy. Nevertheless, these health problems are still unknown among the few populations that still practice a lifestyle similar to our ancestors, for whom these health imbalances are still unknown.Although diet and lifestyles have been changed, the human genome is still programmed for a “hunter-gatherer” economy and thus the eating habits adopted by Western societies in the past century have an enormous etiological contribuition to heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and some types of cancer. The main goal of this work, given the available data, whether the adoption of ancestral diets, with foods rich in polyphenols, would have an impact on the prevention of diseases of metabolic nature. Polyphenols are a heterogenous class of fitochemical molecules, which have been shown to have health benefits due to their anti-inflamatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, anti-adipogenic, anti-diabetic and neuro and cardioprotective properties. The results showed that these bioactive compounds are effective in preventing and delaying the pathophysiological components of metabolic syndrome, which may be important for the discovery of new therapeutic targets, allowing a personalized approach to therapy.
