Resumo:This study explores the asymmetric effects of banking regulation on large and small banks, with a particular emphasis on the Portuguese case. While Basel III has strengthened the prudential framework by imposing stricter capital, liquidity, and leverage requirements, its uniform application has raised concerns about the suitability and proportionality of these requirements for differently sized financial institutions. Through a systematic review of the relevant literature, this research analyses how regulatory instruments have distinct effects on banks of different sizes, influencing financial resilience, operational sustainability, and market competition. The Portuguese banking sector, characterized by the coexistence of systemically important institutions and locally rooted cooperative banks, offers a particularly relevant context to assess the challenges of implementing a harmonized regulatory framework. The findings highlight significant structural asymmetries and underscore the need to tailor regulation according to bank size, complexity and systemic relevance. Such evidence contributes to the ongoing debate on proportionality in banking regulation, advocating for a more flexible approach that ensures both financial stability and institutional diversity.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
