Resumo:Background: Families with preschool children face specific challenges related to the various developmental changes of the children, who are in a phase of active exploration of limits, involving behaviors that are not always easy to deal with, and can assume the proportion of behavioral problems that need to be solved. In this sense, parental education programs, such as the Incredible Years Basic, are relevant, with the main purposes of promoting parental skills, increasing family cohesion and providing parents with a better understanding of child development. To maximize the effects of this type of programs it is pertinent to understand why the treatment works in order to help identify variables that may contribute to make them more effective. Objectives: The general objectives of this research were to evaluate the impact, perceived by the participating parents, that the Incredible Years Program had in several areas of their lives, two years after attending the program, as well as to identify the variables and components of the program that they considered as most relevant to change. It was also intended to study the relationship between perceived change and: sociodemographic variables (age, socioeconomic level and literacy); the fact that they have attended the group alone or accompanied; and the adherence and involvement of the participants in the program. Methods: In this longitudinal study, 80 parents of children aged 3 to 6 years were enrolled, from the 102 who had participated in the earlier project "Incredible Years for the Promotion of Mental Health." In order to respond to the previously mentioned objectives, the Questionnaire on the Experience of Participation in an Incredible Years group was answered by parents, and data from the Inventory for Leaders of the Incredible Years Parent groups were used to evaluate the parents’ involvement in the sessions and adherence to the methodologies of the program. The number of sessions attended was used as an indicator of adherence. Results: Positive changes were reported in several areas of the participants’ lifes and some factors were identified as responsible for these changes, both related to the the program’ contents (with a special emphasis on Praise and Play) and its methods (highlighting Group discussion or in pairs), and to the characteristics / actions of the group leaders. No relationship was found between the perceived changes and sociodemographic variables, nor the fact that parents attended the group alone or accompanied or their level of adherence and involvement in the program. Discussion: The results are discussed based on the review of the scientific literature that framed this study. Conclusions: This research has contributed to highlight the importance of studying the mechanisms of change in parental interventions in order to maximize their effects.
