Resumo:Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the progression of positive mental health throughout the postpartum period and to examine the mediating role of self-compassion and emotion regulation in this process. Methods: This longitudinal study involved a sample of 481 Portuguese postpartum women assessed at three time points: up to three months after childbirth (T1), six months (T2), and fourteen months after the first assessment (T3). Participants answered an online questionnaire composed of validated self-report instruments to assess positive mental health (MHC-SF), self-compassion (SCS-SF), and difficulties in emotion regulation (DERS-SF). Results: Results revealed a significant increase in positive mental health from T1 to the subsequent assessments (F(2, 960) = 6.59, p < .001, ηp² = .014). Additionally, the absence of a prior history of psychopathology, higher educational levels, and the absence of infant health problems were significantly associated with positive mental health at T3. Moreover, self-compassion and emotion regulation difficulties at T2 significantly mediated the relationship between initial and final levels of positive mental health (indirect effect = 0.18, IC 95% = [0.13, 0.23]). Conclusions: These findings highlight the importance of integrating positive mental health into psychological assessment during the postpartum period, promoting a broader and more preventive approach, as well as interventions focused on self-compassion and emotion regulation. Such practices may have a significant impact on public health, given the association between higher maternal positive mental health and better child developmental outcomes.
