Resumo:This study explores the factors associated with life satisfaction and mental health in a sample of older adults, taking into account personality and resilience, as well as the influence of variables such as health, relationships with friends and family and economic situation. The sample consisted of 149 Portuguese elderly people aged between 65 and 90. The participants were assessed using instruments such as the Big Five Inventory, for personality; the Brief Resilience Scale, for resilience; the Satisfaction with Life Scale, for life satisfaction; the Patient Health Questionnaire-4, for mental health; and the sociodemographic questionnaire. The results showed that conscientiousness, extroversion and resilience have a positive and significant contribution to the well-being of older adults, while neuroticism has a negative predictive value, in line with previous studies. In addition, the importance attributed to religion and family relationships was shown to have a positive and significant relationship with life satisfaction, reinforcing the relevance of spiritual and relational values at this stage of life. However, variables such as satisfaction with friends and economic situation showed less consistent associations with indicators of well-being. The study has some limitations, such as the size of the sample and relatively low internal consistency values for some measures. However, the study contributes to understanding the interactions between psychological, social and contextual factors in mental health and life satisfaction in old age.
