Os Castelos do Nordeste Transmontano
| Summary: | The castles in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes represent a defensive line in relation to Castile at a time when Portugal was still a newly formed kingdom and in the process of consolidating its borders. Castles with the most varied origins belonging, in time, to military orders, such as the Hospitallers and the Templars, to families of the great nobility, such as the Braganções and later the Távoras, to the king, naturally. Medieval castles that underwent alterations in the 16th century to adapt to pyroballistics, some on a larger scale than others. Works that, for the most part, were not static in time and adapted to the art of war and the residential character in times of peace. Castles that fit into a route developed to support the interpretation and dissemination of these spaces. Associated with this route is an Interpretive Center that aims to put the visitor in contact with heritage and history. In addition to placing these monuments on the heritage and tourist map, the objective is to increase the tourist flow to Trás-os-Montes and make the space and traditions known, in an increasingly larger and better way. The creation of the route and the interpretive center emerges as a different way of looking at the heritage, moving away from the traditional museum and trying to improve the type of information that is transmitted to those who visit a historic space or building. The theme of medieval castles as structures and Duarte de Armas with his Livro das Fortalezas and their central importance in the study of Portuguese castles are also addressed. At the end, a glossary is added for consultation and future application on the route and respective interpretive center. |
