Resumo:This article outlines the historical evolution of the patient-doctor relationship (PDR) from ancient Greece to the 21st century, including the influence of the social sciences and psychoanalysis. There is also a reflection about the influence of the internet, the empowerment of patients, changes caused by the new private health service providers and by digital medicine. The article finishes by highlighting essential aspects that will affect the PDR in the near future.
