The impact of Assistive Technologies for people with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a videographic analysis
| Summary: | Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by changes and deficits in social and communication skills. Assistive technology (AT) is a technological device used to facilitate or enable communication for people with communication disorders. They are a tool for inclusion, providing access to communication, personal and social autonomy and promoting interaction with peers and the environment. The aim was to find out what impact AT has on the lives of people with ASD. A qualitative, exploratory approach was used through a videographic analysis of technology and autism using the YouTube platform. The data collected was analysed using webQDA software based on the International Classification of Functioning (ICF) codes. Through the analysis of the videos and the literature, it was found that AT is beneficial for the development of skills in people with ASD. The most obvious ones are communication, social interaction, concentration and attention, cognition, and emotional expression. This study showed that the use of AT in interventions with people with ASD has a positive impact on various skills and occupations and is a mediator in terms of gaining autonomy and independence. |
