A mediator augmented with social skills for museum inclusion?
| Resumo: | In order to question the knowledge and skills required of mediators, we propose to examine the social aspect of this profession and its role in the inclusion of vulnerable members of the public (due to medical and/or social problems). To this end, we are studying the partnership between museum mediators and those who accompany vulnerable visitors. This work is drawn from our thesis on inclusion in fine art museums in France and North America. We noted that this co-construction work is developing in many museums in order to integrate small groups of vulnerable publics, but in our view, this is still only a step towards inclusion and universal mediation. We have highlighted two pitfalls: on the museum side, the lack of questioning of the guide's vision of his or her group of vulnerable visitors; on the guide's side, the efforts made to access knowledge localized in a single place (which cannot be transposed to another museum). So, beyond the role of mediator, working in co-construction with guides for vulnerable visitors, we propose the creation of a new profession: the remediator. Inspired by our training as specialized educators, we have blended educational mediation with museum mediation, to conceptualize a double mediation: a museum remediation. Aimed at all vulnerable members of the public (independent or with an accompanying adult) and at all audiences, these offers would create an inclusive environment that goes beyond specific, reserved reception areas: we're aiming to create a universal public. Keywords: mediation, museum, social, hybridization, museum remediation |
