Resumo:The emergence of hybrid work models revealed to be a challenge within the organizational context, especially on a global scale. As the dynamics and contingencies of teams began to evolve and recalibrate in response to the new technologically driven landscape, virtual teams swiftly became a prevalent reality in the majority of corporate environments. Consequently, it is imperative to delve into this virtual context and how leadership behaviours can support to obtain higher effectiveness under these circumstances. This study empirically investigated the mediating role of trust in the relationship between functional leadership and team effectiveness. To this end, a controlled sample, comprising 70 individuals from global virtual teams of two different companies, was utilized. Data collection was conducted through one survey and the findings revealed a robust correlation between functional leadership and team effectiveness and this relationship is mediated by trust. This being said, we could observe a not significant relation between functional leadership and team effectiveness on global virtual teams, and trust emerged as a significant moderator. The study concludes by discussing the implications of these findings and offering recommendations for future research on the subject of leadership strategies for global virtual teams.
