Resumo:Interest rate swaps are one of the most widely trade derivatives and are extremely useful as a hedging instrument for both financial and non-financial firms. This dissertation aims to explain how IRS works in practice, and in what way companies may use them to change their cash-flows. The dissertation depicts the benefits, and some obstacles, that firms can expect from using those derivatives as hedging instruments. Furthermore, it describes and discusses the recent European regulations concerning over-the-counter derivatives, regarding interest rate swaps in particular
