Organizational design & development: A case study to set-up a new global center of excellence in the pharmaceutical industry
| Resumo: | This case study intends to explore the complex and volatile world where new organizations emerge and are shaped by continuous change on their elements and context, leading to multiple responses through strategy, management and culture. This work aims to leverage on existing research and ideas from renowned organizational theorists and explore their implementation in a real word organization, building a case study to analyze the design and development of a new center of excellence within a multinational pharmaceutical company in Portugal. Connecting organizational theory with a fast-changing reality is required to validate and renovate theories and transformations impacting modern organizations. Concerning methodology, this work blends different authors and theories to navigate the challenges of organizational design and development alongside complementary research on management, strategy and culture. Literature highlighting the unique context and challenges affecting the pharmaceutical industry has been considered alongside private conversations and field observation, to study the contingencies but also the success factors to implement and develop a new organization in a super competitive and dynamic external environment. By focusing on a concrete organization design and development scenario, this case offers an effective intersection of theory and business context, with valuable insights and findings on the critical elements and stakeholders involved. This thoughtful combination can contribute to enhance existing knowledge and establish more comprehensive and structured approaches for managing vague concepts as organizational design and development. The research and conclusions assembled may encourage further collaboration from academics and business professionals to consolidate knowledge and cope with a fast-paced context. |
