Resumo:For the kingdoms of León and Castile, the crusade was a link to Christendom. But this link implied a pontifical protagonism that the Iberian kings were unwilling to accept. Through three decisive moments - the reigns of Alfonso VII, Alfonso VIII and Ferdinand III - this paper analyses the phases and features of the tense relationship between kings and popes.
