SCIENCE CLUB AT SCHOOL – MATHEMATICS: PEDAGOGICAL INNOVATION AND STEAM INTEGRATION IN PRIMARY EDUCATION
| Resumo: | This study presents the results of implementing a Science Club at School (Clube Ciência Viva na Escola - CCVnE) focused on Mathematics, developed in a school cluster over three academic years (2022–2025). The project was grounded in a qualitative approach and in the creation of playful learning environments centred on games, challenges, problem-solving, and the use of digital technologies. The activities aimed to promote essential and transversal mathematical competencies, such as logical reasoning, computational thinking, mathematical communication, and the construction of conceptual connections. The Club operated through an itinerant and decentralised model, involving 27 second-grade classes and more than 460 students. Through systematically replicated workshops, students engaged in manipulative, experimental, and technological activities that fostered meaningful learning and contributed to a more positive relationship with Mathematics. Qualitative analysis of the data — obtained from direct observations, photographic records, and open-ended questionnaires administered to class teachers — reveals an overall positive impact on students’ motivation, interest in Mathematics, logical reasoning, autonomy, and problem-solving skills. The results highlight the potential of active, informal, and STEAM-based approaches to promote deeper learning and to engage the school community in improving students’ mathematical performance. |
