Three-dimensional laminar flow in square/square contractions
| Resumo: | The Newtonian fluid flow through square/square sudden contractions, with contraction ratios of 2.4:1, 4:1 and 8:1, was investigated both experimental and numerically. Flow visualisations and detailed velocity field measurements using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) were undertaken at low Reynolds numbers (Re 30). The experimental results are also compared to computation obtained using a finite-volume numerical method. In both approaches, the results show a reduction of the size and strength of the corner vortex with the increase of the flow inertia and revealed a helicoidal flow within the vortical structure. |
