Scientific Denialism on Magazine Covers: A Dialogical-Digital Analysis of Technographisms
| Resumo: | This article aims to map and categorize the covers of Oeste magazine (from 2020 to 2022, during the Covid-19 pandemic) that address topics related to the Covid-19 pandemic and to analyze how the magazine positions itself dialogically and responsively in relation to former president Jair Bolsonaro’s discourses on the same issues. Drawing on the notion of technographism (Paveau, 2022) to understand the graphic elements of the magazine covers, we examine their verbo-visuality (Grillo, 2012) through the lens of dialogism and responsiveness (Bakhtin, 2015; 2016; Volóchinov, 2018), as well as how statements about the vaccine appear carnivalized (Bakhtin, 2013) in a samba school parade as criticism of Jair Bolsonaro. This is a qualitative study (Mussi; Mussi; Assunção; Nunes, 2019; Flick, 2009; Minayo, 2012) that establishes an interface between Dialogical Discourse Analysis (Brait, 2006) and Digital Discourse Analysis (Paveau, 2021). The results show that the discourses denying science during the pandemic (2020–2022), verbalized/defended by former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, (a) resonated across various segments, including media outlets that chose to misinform, such as Oeste magazine, which promoted denialist discourses on its covers, thereby fueling the digital bubble (Fancelli, 2022) around Bolsonaro, and (b) appeared in carnivalized form (Bakhtin, 2013) in the 2022 Rosas de Ouro samba school parade as criticism of the former president. |
