Some images of the decadence of the peninsular peoples in Eça de Queirós’s fictional works
| Summary: | In Causas da decadência dos povos peninsulares nos últimos três séculos, the second conference at the Casino de Lisboa, in 1871, Antero de Quental (1842-1891), leader of the Geração de 70 (Generation of 1870), defined the main reasons for the cultural, economic and political backwardness, which increasingly relegated the Iberian Peninsula to the status of periphery of modern Europe. This article will highlight some scenes and some characters taken from the fictional works of José Maria Eça de Queirós (1845- 1900), which mirror in an exemplary way the Anterian analysis of Iberian provincialism. |
