Douro Wine in the Region of Lamego between 1700 and 1850
| Resumo: | This paper aims to study the manufacturing and marketing process of the designated Douro or "feitoria" wine in the Lamego region between 1700 and 1850. This area produces a wine of exceptional quality, which conquered the preference of the English market and played a significant role in the local and national economy, to the point of requiring State intervention. We have sought to understand the changes which occurred, as well as the times of success and misfortune and the relevant economic and social repercussions. We have also attempted to explain how the political instability of the first half of the 19th century and the resulting weakening of power(s) influenced the sector. During this period, many of the disciplinary measures adopted were not effective. The wine sector was afflicted with strong problems and underwent many changes which distressed the people and the authorities of our region. |
