Resumo:In the second half of the 18th century, Portugal saw an increase in opposition to the seignorial system. These movements were particularly intense in the central region of the country, an area dominated by noble and ecclesiastical manorial houses. This paper focuses on a specific case of resistance to the payment of a feudal tax, a levy proportional to the harvest, which was demanded by the University of Coimbra from the peasants of Poiares, a locality in the Coimbra district. By analyzing a document sent by the wealthier peasants to the lord, suggesting a strategy to dissuade the rebellious peasants who refused to pay the tax, it is possible to observe the decisive role of the clergy in shaping the behavior of the illiterate population.
