Internship report carried out at ICVS – Life and Health Sciences Research Institute

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:The present report details the work carried out at the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) for the conclusion of a master’s degree in Medical Statistics at the University of Aveiro. The internship project focused on developing a strategy to provide researchers with supported outcomes for differential gene expression analysis. Although various normalization methods for RNA sequencing data have been proposed in the literature, the lists of differentially expressed genes they produce can vary considerably. The lack of a standardized pipeline for selecting these lists or genes poses a challenge for the researchers when choosing results to conduct their analysis. To address this issue, a new aggregation method based on Shannon entropy was developed to analyse multiple lists of differentially expressed genes. Additionally, a Shiny application, GeneSEA Explorer, was created to perform differential gene expression analysis, Shannon entropy analysis, and functional enrichment analysis. GeneSEA Explorer is an innovative, user-friendly, and accessible bioinformatics tool for conducting comprehensive differential gene expression analysis.
