Double responsive aqueous biphasic systems composed of ionic liquids and copolymers
| Resumo: | As an alternative to conventional liquid-liquid extraction, aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) are formed by combinations of polymer-polymer, polymer-salt, or salt-salt, with a third component, water. In addition to the successful application in the extraction, separation, and purification of (bio)molecules, ABS show great promise in process integration and simplification if developed using compounds with stimuli responsive features. Herein, we have investigated the potential of polymers and ionic liquids (ILs) as stimuli responsive compounds to develop new and double responsive ABS. The ABS investigated are composed of the IL cholinium acetate, and three triblock copolymers of Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and Polypropylene glycol (PPG) with variable PEG compositions, from 20% to 80%. The phase diagrams were determined by the cloud point titration method and the influence of both temperature and pH was evaluated. Based on the results obtained, ABS present response to both temperature and pH, with the formation of two phases being favoured as both the temperature and the pH increase. The developed systems can be applied as adaptable and integrated extraction and purification platforms, with high relevance for the biotech-based industry. |
