Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Presented work results from the author’s contributions to the field of research methodologies in academic design, namely doctoral research methodologies through the compilation of a set of five academic works already published and reviewed by international peers, in accordance with the alternative thesis presentation modality previewed by the Study Regulations from the University of Aveiro (Regulation 833/2021), Article 63º. The five works are examined under two unifying research questions: What is the relative place of the design project and academic research in design, namely in terms of doctoral research? How can doctoral design research, including practice based research, develop in a way that contributes to strengthening the position of design within academy? As a result, this document states author’s thesis regarding the ontological, epistemological and methodological values underlying academic design research, arguing about the potential knowledge embedded into design projects and the different modes by which it can be extracted for doctoral research purposes. An analogy with quantum theory regarding the wave-particle-wave dual nature of light is establish to illustrate author’s argument. As main contributions to the Education in PhD Design, the work provides (i) a conceptual model that aggregates, clarifies and expands the contributions of well-known authors within academic design scene and (ii) practical guidelines aiming to assist design researchers, especially unexperienced ones, to effectively design their research.
