| Resumo: | This article examines the development of education in Portugal in the 19th century within the context of the rise of the bourgeoisie and the liberal reforms initiated by the Revolution of 1820. It analyzes how education became a cornerstone for the construction of a modern society shaped by bourgeois values of progress, utilitarianism, and secularism. Special emphasis is placed on Alexandre Herculano, a central figure in Portuguese political and social thought, who strongly advocated for public, secular, and critical education.
