Resumo:As the awareness about the significant impacts of hotel operations on local communities and the environment grows, the calls for hotels to align their practices with sustainability principles also increase. Having Egypt as its context, this thesis investigates Sustainable Hospitality Supply Chain Management (SHSCM) aiming at determining the sustainable supply chain practices implemented by hotels and identifying the drivers of and barriers to the adoption of those practices. In addition, the multifaceted repercussions inflicted upon the Egyptian hospitality supply chain by the COVID-19 pandemic were explored, shedding light on its economic, social, and environmental effects. Furthermore, the moderating role of supply chain transparency in the relationship between sustainable practices and sustainable performance within the hotel supply chain was investigated. A series of four studies were conducted, the first study offers a bibliometric analysis of the SHSCM literature, analyzing 160 documents from 2006 to 2021. It identifies top contributors, collaboration patterns, and potential future research directions. The second study investigates sustainable supply chain practices in different hotel categories through a qualitative research approach based on nine case studies (9 hotels), revealing various drivers, barriers, and stakeholder influences. The third study aims to enhance our comprehension of the repercussions inflicted upon the hospitality supply chain by the COVID-19 pandemic through a series of in-depth interviews with 18 hotel managers in Egypt. Lastly, the fourth study assesses the role of supply chain transparency in enhancing the relationship between sustainable practices and performance in the hotels’ supply chain, drawing on a sample of 483 hotels in Egypt obtained through a questionnaire survey and analyzed using partial least square-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The developed work significantly contributes to the sustainable hospitality supply chain management research field: 1) it synthesized existing literature and enhanced the understanding of focal topics; 2) it filled a research gap by focusing on developing countries; 3) it derived a novel conceptual framework that links Sustainability Supply Chain Practices, drivers, barriers, and outcomes; and a 4) it sheds light on the moderating role of supply chain transparency in the relation between sustainable practices and performance. Complementarily, the developed research contributes to hospitality supply chain viii management practice by proposing evidence-based actionable recommendations for hotel managers to enhance supply chain sustainability practices.
