Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:The IST field has been evolving from an early focus on the development of IT applications towards a modern perspective about the improvement of enterprises through taking advantage of IT applications and platforms - IT related enterprise development - a form of organisational design and engineering. It is the view of the authors that IT related enterprise development is a form of organisational design and engineering (ODE), which is the concept that shapes this book. IT related enterprise development involves the (re )design of jobs, tasks, processes and structures “not only as a managerial issue but also as an engineering problem”, as expressed in the call for chapters of the book. The chapter addresses the question of whether IST educational programmes reflect this change through the incorporation of courses about subjects related to the new focus. It presents an examination of IST programmes worldwide based on a conceptual framework for enterprise intervention activities. This examination should not be viewed as a survey. It aims at understanding current trends in IST education and on benchmarking a degree programme at the Universidade do Minho against leading programmes worldwide. The review reveals that courses addressing some form of IT related enterprise development are common in contemporary IST degree programmes in universities around the world. However, the variety of education profiles, the profusion of designations for the name of the courses and differences about the relative importance attributed to courses strongly suggest the absence of a consensual conceptual framework for enterprise elements that could contribute to some convergence on IST education.
