The development of technical yarns containing recycled textile fibres and natural fibres
| Resumo: | The textile industry is one of the most polluting sectors globally. In 2023, the global production and consumption of textiles reached approximately 100 million tonnes, with most of these textiles being disposed of in landfills or incinerated. In response to the increasingly demanding EU regulations, the mitigation and valorisation of textile industry waste has become imperative. Recycling technologies can be regarded as a sustainable solution, with the potential to promote environmental conservation, pollution reduction, and improved energy efficiency. Mechanical recycling is considered the most scalable and cost-effective option for industrial application. However, it is important to note that this process present some disadvantages. These include (i) reduced fibre length, which leads to lower quality yarns and (ii) decreased recycling efficiency in fibre blends containing elastane. The main objective of this study is to develop technical yarns that combine commercial recycled natural fibres, such as wool, with mechanically recycled fibres obtained from textile residues. |
