Physical and sport activities in school and community context: what impact on health indicators?
| Resumo: | INTRODUCTION: Health promotion interventions usually occur at school, where young people stay longer. However, physical / sport activity can be organized not only at school but also in the community. Thus, it seems important to investigate the impact of physical activities / sports, at school or in the community, through different health indicators. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the relationship between physical / sport activity, in or out school hours, and and body composition and physical fitness in adolescents. METHODS . A sample of 98 adolescents (mean 14.5 years) from a secondary-school was analyzed. Physical activity was assessed using pedometers, for a week and throughout 24 hours a day, and the sport activity through a questionnaire. The teenagers were subjected to the Fitnessgram test battery to assess healthy fitness zone (HFZ) in body composition and physical fitness. RESULTS : We found that adolescents with a percentage of fat mass in the HFZ are significantly more active in school hours, and that , on average and in most tests, adolescents classified in HFZ are more active in or out school hours. We have also noticed a significant relationship between the degree of involvement in sports activity in the community and be in HFZ in aerobic fitness. CONCLUSIONS: Physical and sport activities developed in school and community seem to have a significant impact on body composition and physical fitness of adolescents. |
