Infidelity behaviors: their effects on sexual desire, relationship quality and attractiveness

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Recent years have seen an increasing number of studies on relationship infidelity (Zengel, Edlund, & Sagarin, 2013). This growing interest may be due to the dramatic impact that infidelity has on intimate relationships (Vangelisti & Gerstenberger, 2004), leading to the experience of negative emotions and feelings that vacillate between rage toward the partner and depression (Lusterman, 1998). However, little is known about the impact of infidelity on subsequent relationships that an individual may have. Therefore, our main goal was to study the relationship between past infidelity behaviors – both inflicted and suffered – on current romantic relationships. Our specific goals were to: a) Understand if past infidelity behaviors are related to current sexual desire, attractiveness and relationship quality; and b) Identify sex differences on these variables. Participants (N = 382) completed an online questionnaire, in which measures of sexual desire, relationship quality, and attractiveness were obtained. Additionally, participants were asked about their infidelity history. Results suggest that past infidelity behaviors are significantly related to sexual desire, relationship quality, and importance given to attractiveness in the present. Overall, men reported higher levels of infidelity and sexual desire, gave more importance to physical attractiveness and perceived their current relationship as having less quality compared to women.
