Understanding the development of transphobia: the role of need for closure and attachment
| Resumo: | Given the impact of prejudice against trans and gender-diverse individuals, understanding how to minimize and prevent transphobia is crucial. To improve their efficacy, these interventions can benefit from the knowledge of what draws individuals to transphobic attitudes. Therefore, this study explores the role that individual traits and developmental experiences have in this adherence. Namely, it analyzed how attachment affects the relationship between need for closure and transphobia. Additionally, two scales that evaluate the levels of the latter two variables were validated for the Portuguese population. With a sample of 209 higher education students, these measures were adapted successfully and the association between the study variables was explored. Results indicate that attachment dimensions mediate the association between need for closure and transphobia. However, this mediation differs among attachment dimensions. Therefore, the results suggest that future research should focus on how attachment experiences relate to transphobia, and how interventions that aim to reduce or prevent transphobia can integrate both the need for closure and attachment patterns of individuals in their efforts. |
