The effects of emotion on auditory spatial recognition: a behavioral study
| Resumo: | We live in a world with a huge amount of multisensory stimuli presented to us in each second, dispersed spatially all around our own perception. So how does a stimuli capture our attention? In order to do so, it has to have significant implications for the perceiver, with emotion having a critical role in this process. Non-verbal vocalizations can be defined as expressions that typically convey intense emotions, and as such, are stimuli that allows us to transmit different emotions to the participant. The present study aims to study the interactions between vocal emotion and space, using emotional vocalizations presented from eight different locations. Two experiments were done in order to test this relationship in different ways, first by focusing on spatial location of the stimulus, and second by focusing participants’ attention on the emotional quality of the stimulus. Main results showed that a differential spatial processing occurs according to the location of the stimuli, as well as varied effects of each emotion when interacting with spatial discrimination. Regarding the emotional quality of the stimulus, differences in location had an impact on the recognition of emotional valence, as well as on its evaluation of intensity and approachability. |
