Ideas of Europe in normative political theory

Resumo:[Excerpt] 1. Introduction: What is the connection between, on the one hand, the debates in Normative Political Theory regarding the idea of a unified Europe and, on the other hand, the discussions on the same subject in the political fora of European states, such as parliaments, the political parties, and the media? In order to start answering this question, it is necessary to survey the critical junctions of the theoretical debates, fo-cusing on their most significant aspects over the last two decades or so, but also on their historical references, which are recurrent among political theorists. In this chapter, I propose to present a — necessarily sketchy — version of that survey, singling out four different, albeit interconnected, strands of debate: first, on European unity as a product of grand design or project; second, on the political construc-tion of the Euro-polity; third, on the social and economic aspects of the European Union; fourth, on the nature and content of European identity and values.
