Enhancing the teaching profession through quality teacher education: policy and practice in times of teacher shortage
| Resumo: | [Excerpt] The phenomenon of teacher shortages is global and has been exacerbated over the years. While the problem of the lack of teachers is not new, it is essential to find ways of addressing the crisis worldwide. UNESCO ‘sound[ed] the alarm on the global teacher shortage crisis’ as worldwide 69 million teachers are needed to reach universal basic education goals by 2030 (UNESCO Citation2022). More recently, another UNESCO (Citation2024) report indicates that 44 million additional primary and secondary teachers are needed to meet Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 – the attainment of quality education for all by 2030. The same report emphasises how teacher shortage, as a complex global issue, affects both developed and developing countries and is influenced by an array of factors pertaining to high quality preparation and the expectations for teachers in classrooms around the world.[...] |
