Resumo:The work undertaken during this Master Thesis was done in the framework of the Mater Degree in Polymer Engineering at University of Minho, and was performed at the company Lankhorst Ropes. The main area of Lankhorst Ropes is the development of synthetic ropes with high performance fibers, for a large range of applications. Nowadays, this type of materials has conquered several markets and applications due to their inherent low weight and ease of handling. This project was born out from the company’s aim to improve their products. The main objective of the work undertaken during this master thesis was to increase the knowledge concerning the coatings employed in the company. This way, several techniques were developed to perform the physical/chemical characterization of each coating. the increased knowledge was expected to allow further improvements on the ropes performance, in terms of breaking force and abrasion resistance. The combination of techniques such as FTIR, SEM, Break Test, Contact Angle Measurement, Abrasion Resistance test and Measurement of Coefficient of Friction, proved that the application of coatings provides higher mechanical performance to the ropes. This thesis was very resourceful for the company, so that in the future it would be possible to produce coatings internally, reducing costs and optimizing the products accordingly to the requirements of the industry at the time.
