Interweaving is like knitting. Paula Rego’s ‘interior theatre’ and the intricate pattern of her emotional and intellectual networking
| Resumo: | This paper establishes a dialogue amongst visual and literary narratives, drawing on Paula Rego’s intricate series of art compositions which she has been fearlessly creating over the years in a constant “interweaving” process with fellow artists and writers, classic and contemporary, Portuguese or British. Italo Calvino’s essay on “Visibility” (Six Memos for the Next Millenium, 1988) will provide a structural guideline to our analysis and Balzac’s tale “Le Chef d’Oeuvre Inconnu” (1845), will be comparatively discussed as an intriguing reflection on the nature of the work of art, the search for aesthetic perfection and the irrepresentability of the sublime, through the allegory of the feminine. |
