The role of artificial intelligence in the decarbonization of cement and steel industries under the EU emissions trading scheme: disruption of AI camera Systems in manual production lines at Y
| Resumo: | This thesis investigates how EU ETS carbon pricing reconfigures AI adoption barriers for decarbonization in the steel and cement sectors. Using qualitative expert interviews and a TOE framework-based scenario analysis, it reveals that AI's functional role is critically dependent on carbon price levels. At low prices, AI delivers only incremental efficiency gains; at base prices, it enables integration with new technologies but risks short-termism. In high-price scenarios, AI serves as a supporting tool for deep decarbonization, underscoring its transitional, not transformative, role. Achieving meaningful decarbonization will require decisive policy, robust infrastructure, and targeted subsidies to overcome economic and technological barriers. |
