The impact of gender diversity on firm innovation

Resumo:This study examines the impact of gender diversity, among top management and inventors, on firm innovation. By simultaneously investigating top management and inventor diversity this study fills a research gap and highlights the value gender diversity can bring to innovation outcomes. The sample consists of 1831 US firms from 1992 to 2021. The number of innovations is measured by patents and innovation impact by citations. The results show a significantly positive relationship between gender diversity among inventors and innovation, whereas gender diversity in top management doesn’t seem to be a significant driver in innovation. Therefore, female inventors increase innovation outcomes.
