Understanding the Impact of Smart Home Technologies on Physical and Psychological Well-Being: A Stimulus-Organism-Response Perspective

Resumo:Smart home technologies (SHT) have become integral to modern residential living, offering significant benefits through automation, personalization, improved energy efficiency, and enhanced security. While extensive research has focused on factors influencing the initial adoption of these technologies, less attention has been given to the determinants and outcomes of sustained usage. This study employs the Stimulus-Organism-Response (S-O-R) framework to investigate how external factors such as social influence, price value, perceived innovativeness, and performance expectancy impact users' psychological and behavioural outcomes through mediating constructs like utilitarian value, confirmation, and user satisfaction. Using survey data from 399 smart home technology users, the study empirically tests the proposed model. Results indicate that performance expectancy strongly influences confirmation, utilitarian value, and user satisfaction, leading to significant improvements in psychological and physical well-being. This research provides novel insights into the mechanisms by which sustained interactions with smart home technologies enhance user well-being, informing practitioners on designing user-centered, reliable, and effective smart home solutions.
