Resumo:"Hydrogen sulfide has a physiological role in the human organism. The tight control and balance of its metabolism is very important since high concentrations of bacterial-derived H2S confers them increased resistance to host leukocytes. Infections caused by Staphylococcus (S.) aureus are very common at present and are associated with resistant strains. S. aureus has a cst operon that encodes proteins responsible for maintaining the tight balance in H2S metab-olism. One of these proteins is SQR, responsible for the first step of H2S detoxification. In collaboration with Giedroc's lab, the major aim of this project is to biochemically and structurally characterize the SQR protein from S. aureus (SaSQR).(...)"
