Transforming Raw Data into Actionable Insights: A Business Intelligence Solution for a Small Company
| Resumo: | Tourism is a vital sector in the Algarve region of Portugal, where boat tours to visit natural attractions like the Benagil caves are a key part of the visitor experience. Providing a highquality service and understanding operational constraints, customer satisfaction, and environmental impacts are essential for business success. This project focuses on Tridente Boat Trips, a tour operator based in Armação de Pêra, and aims to process, integrate, and analyze data collected from internal operational systems, TripAdvisor customer reviews, and marine weather Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). The objective is to create a comprehensive Business Intelligence (BI) solution to support data-driven decision-making. Initially, the collected data was loaded into Azure SQL Database and subsequently migrated to Microsoft Fabric, where a lakehouse architecture was implemented to structure the data into raw and transformed layers. Using Microsoft Fabric’s Dataflow Gen2, the data was cleaned, enriched, and modeled using a dimensional star schema approach. Finally, analytical dashboards were developed in Power BI, providing insights concerning booking patterns, operational performance, customer satisfaction, and the impact of sea conditions on tour execution and cancellations. This project serves as real-world example of how Business Intelligence platforms can enhance operational understanding and support strategic planning in Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the tourism sector. |
