Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:New legislation (“Novo Estatuto do Medicamento”) introduced parallel imports (PI) into the Portuguese Pharmaceutical market. In this paper we use a model where patients differ in the valuation of pharmaceuticals (vertical and horizontal differentiation) to test the Generic market. We forecast about the economic impacts on consumers, National Health System, Pharmaceutical Industry and Structure of the market. We show that in the short run the introduction of horizontal competition, via PI, will increase both generic and branded drug prices. In the medium run an increase in competition between branded and generic goods (increase in penetration rates) and an increase in welfare are expected.
