The influence of betting promotions on gambling behaviour: the moderating role of financial literacy levels

Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:This study explores how betting promotions influence the intention to continue betting among individuals with different financial literacy levels. A survey of 210 participants revealed through regression analyses that promotions, particularly confidence-building and atypical-event incentives, strongly predict betting intentions. Financial literacy moderated these effects: low-literacy individuals showed intensified impulsivity and risk-taking, while highly literate participants resisted these influences. Additionally, frequent betting and younger age emerged as key factors increasing betting intentions. These findings raise ethical concerns about unequal impacts on vulnerable groups and highlight the need for regulatory and educational measures to promote informed decision making in gambling contexts.
