Resumo:The speed and fluidity of the technological era we are experiencing demand from each individual a constant update and adaptation to the new phenomena of the world. The Visual thinking strategies first appear in the nineties, at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), in New York, aiming at the development of citizens more aware and more active in their community. This methodology addresses the topic of Artistic Education and visual literacy, and it was adapted later on to the classroom, allowing us to set up this set of activities that enhance not only our students‘ visual thinking skills but also their critical thinking and their ability to produce texts of higher quality in a foreign language. We introduce a review of the literature on these topics – visual literacy, critical thinking and Visual thinking strategies – and a critical description of the activities implemented to English and Spanish learners, at Escola Básica e Secundária de Ibn Mucana. Conclusions indicate a strong adherence from the students to these activities and that they allow a tangible progress for all students. Also, that the development of the writing skills in a foreign language is intimately connected to the development of the students‘ speaking skills.
