The Greta Thunberg effect: an analysis of corporate tweets on climate change

Resumo:The debate on climate change has creasingly attracted attention.Although Twitter provides valuable insights into the climate change discussion and how it is reflected in companies’ communication behavior, previous research has only examined public opinion. This is the first study that analyzes corporate climate change tweets under the influence of climate activist Greta Thunberg. We register and code the volume and sentiment of tweets from German DAX30 companies and Greta Thunberg between 2016 and 2020. The findings reveala significant relation between corporate climate change tweets and Greta’s tweets. Furthermore, we identify an overall positive sentiment for corporate tweets.
