Determining success factors for mergers and acquisitions in adjacent business areas

Resumo:Adjacent mergers and acquisitions (M&A) enable firms to diversify close to their core business, access new growth drivers and enhance their competitive edge. Research regarding adjacent M&A is virtually non-existing. This paper presents a comprehensive framework of determinants of success in adjacent M&A. It highlights the need for a strong core business and identifies critical success factors which are adapted to the unique characteristics of adjacent M&A. The paper fills a gap in the literature by laying the groundwork for future empirical research and provides potential guidance for practitioners.
