| Resumo: | In 1918, humanity fell victim to a pandemic ofinfluenza, that caused more than forty milliondeaths. We approach the specific characteristics ofthis influenza pandemic, the virus responsible andthe recent genetic work concerning the gene thatcodes some of the viral proteins involved. Thedemographic, social and political consequences ofthis event, particulary in Portugal, where it becameknown as the “pneumónica”, are discussed. A visionof the world, the war and the country in 1918, takinginto consideration the fact that this disease killedmainly young adults, is portrayed, bearing in mindthat this tragedy has been largely forgotten. |
