Resumo:The inability to reproduce an experimental disaster means that Disaster Medicine has to be based on history, therefore careful analysis is important to notice mistakes and find solutions that can shape future responses for first aid workers. The aim of this study is to characterize and analyse the perceptions of the health interveners in the emergency room in relation to their role in the management and implementation of a response to a disaster situation at Dr Nélio Mendonça Hospital [HNM]. Based on the statement by Bandeira (2008) that "[...] the virtues and defects of a plan only become clear when it is put into practice, in reality", it will not be a waste of time to warn of the need to continue with research in the DM area and to call for greater investment in the training of and awareness-raising strategies for health workers who respond to a disaster situation, thus making it possible to rectify inadequacies and to understand the shortcomings in the training of the interveners.
