| Resumo: | With the development of a more intervenient Medicine and an increasing number of critical patients and immunocompromised patients, fungal infections have become a very important issue in clinical practice. The Candida type funguses are the most frequently cause of infection in the humans. The main objective of this work is to revise some of the published literature about candidemia, defined as the presence of Candida spp. in the bloodstream, addressing the epidemiology (with special attention to the Portuguese situation), clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and antifungal susceptibility. Based on early diagnosis awareness, the antifungal treatment has impact on the mortality rates, and therefore it is of utmost importance to be alert to this clinical entity. |
