Detalhes bibliográficos
Resumo:Occupational rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the nose, which is characterized by intermittent or persistent symptoms (i.e., nasal congestion, sneezing, rhinorrea, itching), and/or variable nasal airflow limitation and/or hypersecretion due to causes and conditions attributable to a particular work environment and not to stimuli encountered outside the workplace. OR can be caused by immunologic or non-immunologic reactions. The goal of this revew is to analyse the literature seeking for the best way no identify, prevent and treat OR and realize what is the real socio-economic impact of OR. There are individual risk factors and others dependent on the workplace. And doctors should be aware for both. Workers education plays also an important role on preventing OR. Avoiding exposure to the causal agent is the most recommended treatment, witch is not always possible. Decreasing the time of exposure and increasing the ventilation can reduce the cases of OR. The treatment has two main objectives: minimize the symptoms and prevent the evolution to Occupational Asthma. The pharmacological treatment is similar to the one used in other types of rhinitis. The socio-economic impact of OR seems to be higher than it was thought, due to the indirect cost associated.
